MICHALSKA STR. 6

HOUSE SIGN
House sign with the figure of Saint Michael on a medieval house with a baroque-classical facade. The house is a national cultural monument.

House No. 6 on the corner of Michalska and Biela streets is on the main street, near the Michalska town gate. The massive log house has an ancient history, since the 13th century it belonged to the Austrian monastery of Heiligenkreuz and was part of the Cistercian court with a wine store. The house was structurally connected to the neighboring Katharinenkapelle. In the 16th century, part of the property was bought by the city for the new town houses on Weißen Straße. In the 17th century the house was bought by the Capuchins and extensively renovated. At the end of the 18th century it was acquired by secular owners. The house was raised and rebuilt in the style of baroque classicism. A sign with the figure of St. Michael was also placed on the facade.

EXECUTION
Saint Michael the Archangel is icono-graphically compellingly represented as a winged knight in armor with spear or sword and shield defeating a dragon. He symbolizes protection from the forces of evil and is the leader of the heavenly hosts.

At the time of the restoration of house 6, the house sign on the metal plaque had already been defaced. According to the author’s (O. Novotová) solution, the new house sign was made in the original style. The winged knight St. Michael defeats the dragon with his sword. The metal plate with the figure’s image was fitted into the niche in its original place. The original decorative metal canopy has been restored.

The exterior of the house has been extensively restored while preserving its baroque-classical character, with an authentic color scheme of olive green and muted white and using high-quality KEIM materials.
